Ο Κινέζος βιοφυσικός, He Jiankui, ισχυρίστηκε στο Associated Press ότι τα δίδυμα κοριτσάκια Lulu και Nana γεννήθηκαν τον περασμένο Νοέμβριο, αφού όμως σε εμβρυακό στάδιο ο He Jiankui τροποποίησε πρώτα το γονίδιο CCR5 που μέσω μίας πρωτεΐνης επιτρέπει στον ιό HIV να μολύνει τα κύτταρα. Τότε, ο Κινέζος επιστήμονας είχε ισχυριστεί ότι τροποποίησε τα έμβρυα επτά ζευγαριών που είχαν καταφύγει στην εξωσωματική γονιμοποίηση ωστόσο το τελικό αποτέλεσμα έγινε γνωστό μόνο στη μία περίπτωση (των δίδυμων κοριτσιών). Μάλιστα ο ίδιος είχε ισχυριστεί ότι τα μωρά γεννήθηκαν στην κλινική «Shenzhen HarMoniCare Women's and Children's Hospital» αν και το νοσοκομείο αρνήθηκε κάτι τέτοιο. Στο άκουσμα της είδησης, Αμερικανοί επιστήμονες και ερευνητές καταδίκασαν τις πράξεις του Κινέζου επιστήμονα χαρακτηρίζοντας τον ασυνείδητο, ανέντιμο και ανήθικο. Πάντως δεν υπήρξε κάποια ανεξάρτητη επιβεβαίωση των ισχυρισμών του He Jiankui, ενώ και η εργασία του δεν δημοσιεύτηκε σε κάποιο επιστημονικό σύγγραμμα –αν και πως θα μπορούσε να γίνει κάτι τέτοιο; Το γεγονός ωστόσο ότι ο He Jiankui καταδικάστηκε, μετά από μία μυστική δίκη στην Κίνα, σε τριετή φυλάκιση ενδεχομένως να σημαίνει πολλά για τις ενέργειες του. Σε ποινή φυλάκισης 2 ετών και 18 μηνών καταδικάστηκαν και δύο συνεργάτες του, οι Zhang Renli και Qin Jinzhou. Οι τρεις τους καταδικάστηκαν για «παράνομες ιατρικές πρακτικές» όπως είναι η τροποποίηση γονιδίων ανθρώπινου εμβρύου για «αναπαραγωγικούς σκοπούς» σύμφωνα με το Κινέζικο ειδησεογραφικό πρακτορείο Xinhua. Επίσης θα πληρώσει πρόστιμο ύψους 3 εκ. yuan (περίπου $429 χιλιάδες) ενώ το δικαστήριο διέταξε την αναστολή διά βίου της άδειας ασκήσεως αναπαραγωγικής ιατρικής. Σύμφωνα με την Δικαστική απόφαση, ο ίδιος και οι συνεργάτες του συνωμότησαν το 2016 για να προχωρήσουν στην τροποποίηση του γονιδίου CCR5 με τέτοιο τρόπο ώστε να κάνουν τους ανθρώπους ανθεκτικούς στον ιό HIV. Η επιστημονική ομάδα βοήθησε στον τομέα της αναπαραγωγής πολλαπλά ζευγάρια που είχαν μολυνθεί με τον ιό HIV σύμφωνα με το ειδησεογραφικό πρακτορείο Xinhua. Μετά την γενετική τροποποίηση των εμβρύων (περίπου τριών με πέντε ημερών), εμφυτεύθηκαν σε δύο γυναίκες, οι οποίες γέννησαν τρία γενετικά τροποποιημένα μωρά. Στην δίκη μάλιστα για πρώτη φορά γίνεται γνωστό ότι τελικά τα μωρά ήταν τρία. Το δικαστήριο επεσήμανε ότι η τεχνική γενετικής παρέμβασης δεν είχε «επαληθευτεί για την ασφάλεια και την αποτελεσματικότητα της» και ότι ο He Jiankui και οι συνεργάτες του πλαστογράφησαν έγγραφα για να πείσουν ασθενείς και ιατρούς να τους βοηθήσουν.
