    You just throw your money into the trash can, because they didn't offer you anything that they advertised, other than just what OVH does by default and for free.

    Exactly, certain guys like to ddos other servers due to the purpose, they lost their server because of the same ddos attacks. However, the correct way is to not continue 'spreading' the rage this way, instead protect yourself and keep in peace. That's about it. Obviously, not what is happening and not what will happen tho.

    Not in all of them, in CentOS for example, iptables come pre-configured together with SELinux enabled. So the applications doesn't allow input connections by default, due to these constraints.

    Yes, you can, but you still would need to consider 'co-locating it' in some datacenter, instead of running it from home and at the same time, pay for some good third part DDoS Protection.

    Of course if he has not too much budget, because if so, he can order a good server in a good datacenter, that provides a decent support and trustability/stability and a ddos protection somewhere...
