Maxtor has seen many topics which get reported here and action is taken. Donation to get a topic stickied does not exempt them from the rules of this forum and this blatant deception is wrong. The rules clearly state that you must tag your topic with your server's software type, L2J or L2Off (read the rules topic of that section), the creator of that topic is running L2J, but lying about it to attempt to gain players who may not have the knowledge to realise that it is in fact L2J. The job of the moderators of this forum is to prevent rule breaking to ensure the sections are maintained as a fair and open ground for all users, and one person assuming he is exempt from the rules because he can trick players into believing his lies is wrong and action should be taken accordingly. By tagging his topic as "Unk" it has the same effect as putting ascii characters in the topic name, something of which is against the rules, as it draws extra attention to the topic from users who are curious as to what the "Unk" means. Despite the fact that this person is actually running L2J and the topic should be tagged accordingly.

The topic in question -> http://www.maxcheaters.com/forum/index.php?topic=154933.0 This server is tagged as "[unk]", it clearly states in the rules of the Private Server section, as posted by Maxtor The creator of the topic has provided no evidence either in the topic or on his own website or community forum to indicate that he is indeed using custom software and is therefore being deceptive to the users of this board. His server is l2j which has, at the most, been custom modified, but that does not mean that his server is not l2j or exempt from the rules of this forum. If any of the moderators had read the discussions between myself(and others) and the creator of the topic before the posts had been deleted and the topic locked, you will have seen that he made no attempt to provide evidence in support of his supposed "custom software". Setekh can validate this. All I ask is that this topic be correctly tagged as L2J so that the users of this forum are not deceived, especially as the topic has been locked and there can be no open questioning of the "custom software" as was previously mentioned.

That is an incredibly simple marketing technique that has been used for years in any retail area. Offering cash-prizes increase the interest in his server, and in turn, the donations he will ultimately get, so by spending say $300 on an event, he will gain $3000 back for it... It's not rocket science... BTW, if he was really doing it for the community, he would cap the donations at the monthly server cost, and have a real-time donation tracking system fully public on his website. Admittedly that would be easy to fake and show it as having received $1000 when in actuality you received $5000, but at least it would be a start. If Sawk had ANY interest in the "community" then he wouldn't have closed the server the last 3 times despite having received more than enough donations to cover the running cost.

Atm I couldn't answer that question, I can't forsee any situation right now that would cause me to DDoS someone, as I don't work for a server it's not like I can say it would be in defence of that server.

I am far from a good guy, I have a botnet and I have DDoSed people in the past, but I know that it was wrong and I know that it is childish and it is something I haven't done in over 3 years and it is something I will never do again unless in the most extreme of circumstances.

It is EXACTLY the same thing. The point of a DDoS is to deny the users of a service access to it until the attack has stopped. If you smash the windows of a shop then you prevent the users of that shop from accessing it until they have been replaced. Both actions have the same reason and the same effect. To cause disruption to a service so that the users of that service will then change to your service.

So if you opened a shop on a street across from a shop that sells the same things as you, you would go and smash their windows just because it's competition?

Which is exactly my point, that only shows how childish and insecure in themselves and their own work that the attacker is. You don't have to. Plenty of people have got on fine in this world without resorting to illegal methods to get ahead.

Respect and fear are 2 very different things, someone who fears you can never respect you. The only thing DDoSing does is prove how childish the attacker is, and increase their chance of having the police knock on their door. Especially for people within the USA and the EU with the major crack-down on botnets and increase in severity of punishments. Botnets however can prove to be a useful thing, but using them for DDoS attacks is stupid and childish.
