L2smr is good enough... and with baked lights combination (3ds max render to texture option, with corona/v-ray/mental ray/arnold etc) to make better lighting in level. You even can make fake PBR on whole level using baked lights/reflections etc. Like i did old time ago with Towers from LOL, and Asuki with custom weapons. -

don't know about guides. Just try to find 3dripperdx tutorials on youtube, and how to use it with 3ds max. It's not fast process to make radar map, but the result worth it

like this one? To make radar map you need to use 3dripperxDx or NinjaRipper and 3ds max for rendering. Or in simple way just use geodata layer 0 (.BMP from HDGE)
