Από ότι φαίνεται, το τμήμα μάρκετινγκ της Ιαπωνικής εταιρείας αποφάσισε, σε μία προσπάθεια να διατηρηθεί το ενδιαφέρον των χρηστών και το «hype» σε υψηλά επίπεδα όλο αυτό το χρονικό διάστημα που απομένει μέχρι το επίσημο λανσάρισμα, να αποκαλύπτονται σταδιακά πληροφορίες για το επερχόμενο PlayStation. Η Sony ανακοίνωσε ότι η νέα της παιχνιδοκονσόλα θα ονομάζεται PlayStation 5 και πως θα κυκλοφορήσει στα τέλη του 2020.

Η εταιρεία, πέρα από την ονομασία και το χρονικό διάστημα που θα κυκλοφορήσει η νέα της κονσόλα, αποκάλυψε και ορισμένες λεπτομέρειες για το νέας γενιάς χειριστήριο που θα λανσαριστεί μαζί με το PlayStation 5. Στην ανακοίνωση της Sony, ο Jim Ryan, Πρόεδρος της Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe δήλωσε ότι με την επόμενη γενιά η Sony επιθυμεί να καταστήσει περισσότερο καθηλωτική την εμπειρία gaming με το PlayStation 5, και το νέο χειριστήριο πρόκειται να συμβάλει ενεργά σε αυτό τον στόχο.

Σύμφωνα με τον Jim Ryan, το νέο χειριστήριο χαρακτηρίζεται από δύο καινοτομίες: Πρώτον, από τη τεχνολογία απτικής ανάδρασης που θα αντικαταστήσει την τεχνολογία δόνησης (rumble) που υπάρχει στα χειριστήρια τώρα. Με την απτική τεχνολογία, οι χρήστες θα μπορούν να νιώθουν αρκετά μεγαλύτερο εύρος κραδασμών/ δονήσεων, και έτσι σε ένα παιχνίδι racing sim, το τρακάρισμα του αυτοκινήτου με ένα τοίχο θα δίνει διαφορετική αίσθηση, με ένα τάκλιν σε έναν ποδοσφαιρικό αγώνα. Μάλιστα, η τεχνολογία θα είναι τόσο λεπτομερής, που ο χρήστης θα νιώθει πότε τρέχει σε ένα κάμπο με ελαφριά βλάστηση ή πότε διασχίσει έναν βάλτο γεμάτο λάσπες. Δεύτερον, από τη τεχνολογία που για την ώρα έχει την ονομασία «προσαρμοστικές σκανδάλες», και οι οποίες έχουν ενσωματωθεί στα κουμπιά σκανδάλες L2/R2. Χάρη στο νέο αυτό χαρακτηριστικό, οι developers θα μπορούν να προγραμματίσουν την αντίσταση των σκανδαλών, ώστε ο gamer να μπορεί να νιώσει πως είναι να τεντώνει τη χορδή του τόξου του καθώς σημαδεύει με ένα βέλος τον εχθρό του ή πως είναι να επιταχύνει ένα εκτός δρόμου όχημα σε ανώμαλους δρόμους. Σε συνδυασμό με την τεχνολογία απτικής ανάδρασης, το χειριστήριο είναι αρκετά καλύτερο στην προσομοίωση διάφορων καταστάσεων και η εμπειρία gaming μπορεί αν είναι ακόμα πιο αληθοφανής και πειστική.

Ο Jim Ryan δήλωσε επίσης ότι οι developers έχουν ήδη στα χέρια τους τα πρώτα δείγματα των νέων χειριστηρίων, και ότι στην Sony ανυπομονούν να δουν τι μπορούν να κάνουν με τα νέα χαρακτηριστικά που βρίσκονται στη διάθεση τους.
