Without geoengine, 512mo is normally far than enough (even 256mo on aCis, and 128mo if you drop scripts). With geoengine it depends about your pack, but 2g is normally far than enough. I only speaks about JVM, if you got other applications (OS, client, eclipse, chrome) count as much as needed by such applications.
