A really good support truly shines in a game. The thing is that common(!) supports, except from Janna, (Taric, Soraka, Sona, Alistar) at their current state can be played sufficiently effectively even by a guy who deserves to be at 1000 rating max.

 

Ofc, there are other viable support options like Leona, Nunu, Gankplank, Maokai and Blitzcrank that are not often picked.
