    GTAIII had more explorable gameplay, Mafia more interesting and realistc story (dunno how it is gonna be on Mafia 2). Both games were the bomb at the time. GTA VC, SA, IV etc. can't compare untile we see Mafia2

    You can acctually get jail'ed on some servers, but before that you get a warning.

    Remmembering the pass is possible, some time ago there was the same problem for me. After couple of hours thinking, I finally remmebered it. You can try speaking with a gm/admin, but in those cases they are ussualy unhelpful.
