Versus Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 (edited) Dota 2 is being developed by Valve, a corporation many heard about at the "golden age". Valve became known with these games: Half Life, Portal and of course Counter-Strike. I should mention that a Valve game comes along with Steam gaming platform and of course Source engine. Dota 2 is not an exception. What Steam has to offer to you? Pretty much everything. Connect with other people, make new friends, make purchases throughout Steam and of course use Steam servers to play Dota 2 online. If you played Dota before, i'm sure you know how hard this game is. It takes a lot to learn everything about it, might be frustrating at start, but in game tutorials and guides can help you a lot! I guarantee that after all the frustration ends, you will be addicted and unable to quit Dota 2, also you won't even be able to look at other ARTS/MOBA games, like LoL or HoN. If you used to play Dota 1, forget what you knew, now shop is integrated, every hero has suggested items and all abilities are used with QWER (there is an option to use legacy keys, which is disabled by default). If you ever played Dota 1, or saw a friend of yours playing it in WarCraft 3 (dota was just a mod in WC3), you should know that almost everything is retained to Dota 2, just with better graphics, matchmaking system, report system, punishing the abusers/leavers with Low Priority queue and chat ban and weekly updates. All the skills work the exact same way as Dota 1, everything pretty much works like Dota 1. In other words if you are still playing Dota 1, you should instantly move to Dota 2, it's free! Maybe i should have mentioned it before, Dota 2 is completely free with no hero pool limitation (unlike LoL) and of course since it's out of beta, you can join any time you wish, without even spending 1 euro. Now that smells fishy, how does a corporation like Valve makes up the money to keep their servers alive and pay for the development of the game? The answer is simple (or at least at Valve's eyes). If you ever played Team Fortress (the second most popular Steam game after Dota 2), you'd know about the in-game store. You can buy cosmetics for heroes, that give absolutely nothing, but appearance (cosmetics duhhh) IF and only IF you wish. I have almost 2,000 games and i've only spent 10 euro in this game just to support it, because i think it's absolutely amazing! Steam is one of the most popular gaming platforms in USA and pretty popular in EU too, they host a lot of games, but Dota 2 just after its release has more than 6 million unique accounts and more than 500,000 concurrent players! Which is by far the biggest number in ALL Steam games! But Dota 2 is not just about you playing it, the client itself contains Dota-Tv which allows you to watch any live or recent game, even tournaments, tournament tickets are not expensive at all and money is used to pay the winning teams. And now here's the fun part, Valve organizes an international tournament every year, where the best teams of the world join and play for the money prize. If you are curious about the money prize, this year's winning team, Alliance won a little over 1,6 million dollars!! In total Valve gave 2,6 million dollars in the top teams, which is the biggest award in e-sports to this very day!!! Valve constantly updates the game, we expect to see many new and amazing features, including the missing Dota 1 heroes (oh techies i miss you so much!) A friendly reminder: if you don't expect to dedicate a lot of time playing Dota 2, then you shouldn't start it at all. Like i already mentioned, Dota is a really hard game, you get to actually understand what's going on after at least 100 games, before that, you are a completely newbie, there are many tutorials built-in Dota 2, which can help you get started, but that's it. If you want to play something easy and you are just a casual gamer, try LoL, like it's name LoL is a pretty funny game, where every hero has almost the same abilities, just with small differences, that's NOT the case in dota, every hero is completely unique and you'll have to play a lot to understand what every hero does. I hope you realize just how cool Dota 2 is and you decide to actually start it, sorry if i bore you with all the detail, but it's really sad to see that a game like Dota 2 doesn't even get half the recognition that LoL does, even in maxcheaters. Maybe one day, all these outdated sticky dota 1 topics will be updated. Edited September 16, 2013 by Versus
