He applied a style on the text which included a color overlay.So the cliping mask wouldn't be visible.

But still, he should do this:

 

Ctrl+Right Click on the text layer's box (so the content of the layer would be selected) and then go to Select>Inverse Selection and simply press Delete while the brushed layer was selected.

 

 

Anyways, Avicii, you still got lot of work to do before posting any tutorials.Keep it up.
