League of Legends is suffering from an identity crisis, ever since S3 began. After the sudden realisation of the game's success with the S2 World Championship, Riot made an effort to make the game more fun. However, in this effort, they seem to have made the mistake of supposing that damage means more fun. So, they gave easy access to damage to every hero, through new items, reworks, buffs and stuff. This made old school supports and tanks useless, since they didn't benefit from damage, while others did. Soraka and Nautilus are a few good examples. This mistake was not detected early enough so we were led to the bullshit assassin meta of S4, when any champion that didn't have even a little bit of burst damage was completely useless (let me remind you that the only viable jungle picks back then were Lee and Kha Zix). In S5 Riot had understood that tanks had become obsolete, so they tried to buff them, but they retained their "damage = fun" mentality, so voila our current meta. These are not tanks, these are bruisers with lots of CC.
