Concerns and Questions

Question

Hi guys I have 2 Questions&Concerns

1) What is a dedicated server? Can I not lie and say that I have one meanwhile I dont?

2) Please stop commenting about free websites, If a person wants to start a server for fun they will not spend 100$ for a domain and keep it running, (Look at the17Heroes.tk) Theyre fine

1) dedicated server = server machine in a datacenter. You can obviously lie, but whenever you reach 30 online players server will lag baddly and everyone will know it (and anyone can just open l2.ini and see you are just a random hostname.no-ip etc).

2) if you are serious about the server project, you want to get more than 30 players online, so you want a dedicated. Why pay the money (~100€) of a dedicated and not of the one of a webpage (~5€)? Your server will look terribad with a .tk and people know you are not serious. If you are a cheapass you can eventually host your webpage on the dedicated, but it's not recommended.

1: A dedicated server is a server hosted at a datacenter such as Hetzner or WorldStream. Dedicated servers are meant to have over 20 players online (which I see you most likely won't need...) Yes, you can lie about having 12 core CPU's and 30 GB RAM's and 1 GB internet speed. It's obvious when you hear "FACK GM NO WATCHINK THE PORNO MAKE LAG" commonly in game.

2: Wake up. Domains don't cost $100. Having a domain just makes their server look good, I really don't care about the domain as long as it doesn't look soo unapealling that it scares people away (which is most likely the case of your server...) Look at The17Heroes? Wow. That is the WORST example of being a "good" server. The17Heroes is NOT EVEN close to successful. The reason why the get donations is because the lame admin makes farm so damn hard it's almost impossible unless you donate. Hey, welcome to 2010! The17Heroes went from 400 players MAX in 2009, t0 75 MAX in 2010, present day.

Does not matter how strong your personal PC is, the killer is that it is a "home based" server and when people find this out you will be there alone. The main function will be the speed of your connection and players 20+ online or more online will notice it when they start lagging. The more experienced players will do an IP trace to see where your server is located and perform a ping speed test, things like this cannot be hidden or lied about.

Generally dedicated data centers give your a 100mbit connection with is needed, sometimes you can get away with 10mbit but it is still not the best.. ADSL and most home based Cable ISP's have really bad connections for running servers (5mbit or 1mbit with maybe 512k upload if you are lucky).

You're right for the half things. But I have been running a server from my home PC and I had 100 players online. Yes with little lags but I had them on my HOME PC which my cousin was using for chatting in Skype >.< I told him million times to don't do it but he's an idiot. This doesn't matter.. There ARE good ISP's for low prices. I pay 15$ for my internet. And still I got 100 players. It was a high rate server so it was very good.. All the time there were PvP's. It was nice. But the other thing you said..

the killer is that it is a "home based" server and when people find this out you will be there alone.
Guess how my server died? Exactly from a DDoS attack... =/ So I've learned from this that it's useless to start a server from your home PC. You'll always get attacked... And the worst part is that you can't do ANYTHING about it. Hosting costs much too.. You'll need a few hundred dollars extra to start a server. When you open a donation some of the money will come back. But it's really how you setup your server. You may get a value of 30$ per month or you can get over a 1000$ per month. Everything is based on luck and how you setup everything.

1) What is a dedicated server? Can I not lie and say that I have one meanwhile I dont?

Well actually you CAN lie.. No one will stop you. But maybe 95% of the people won't believe you. (The other 5% are kiddos :D ).

I don't know if the17Heroes is set up at home or not but yes.. There is a little truth in your post. Yes, if you want to start a server for fun, of course you won't pay 200$ for a monthly hosting.. But you're just wasting the people's time. IF you make a very very very good server and you actually have good home PC and internet.. Some of the guys playing will maybe get a little memory from the server.. But it can't be a successful server for sure.

Damn! The post got really big! :D
