The other day, I took on a project for a company.
The people in charge told me that the project had to be delivered by me, in my field, within 3 weeks.
We agreed, and I got started.
Now, I already knew I wasn’t going to make that deadline.
But since I was in full anti-professional mode, I accepted anyway – with the plan that when the time came, I’d just come up with an excuse.
Something like:
– “I got Covid…”
– “There was a tragic personal event…”
– “A key person on the team quit and I couldn’t keep up…”
You know, Balkan-style excuses. Something would pop into my head when the time came.
So the 3 weeks go by, and I’ve finished about 40% of the work.
They contact me and say:
– “Since you didn’t deliver on time, we’d like our €450 advance back.”
Naturally, I refused.
I told them:
– “I’ve already completed 40% of the job. I can’t return the money.”
They smiled and said:
“It’s not your fault. We’re the idiots for trusting you.”
And in that moment… I didn’t feel ashamed.
I didn’t feel offended.
I felt understood.
Not professionally.
But… Balkan-ly.
