Είναι γνωστό ότι η Google ηχογραφεί τις συζητήσεις/ συνομιλίες των χρηστών με τον Google Assistant αφότου πρώτα όμως οι χρήστες χρησιμοποιήσουν την έκφραση «αφύπνισης» (ΟΚ Google ή Hey, Google). Αυτό ωστόσο που δεν γνώριζαν πολλοί, είναι ότι χρησιμοποιεί τρίτους που μισθώνει για να αξιολογούν χειροκίνητα μέρος αυτών των συζητήσεων. Σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις μάλιστα, στις συζητήσεις αναφέρονται δεδομένα όπως ονόματα και διευθύνσεις κ.ά.

H Google ισχυρίζεται ότι η μεταγραφή των ηχογραφήσεων του voice assistant είναι κρίσιμης σημασίας για την ανάπτυξη της τεχνολογίας αναγνώρισης φωνής ώστε να είναι σε θέση να καταλαβαίνει πολλές γλώσσες, διαλέκτους και προφορές. Επιπλέον, σύμφωνα με την εταιρεία, εκείνοι που είχαν μισθωθεί (γλωσσολόγοι κ.λπ), είχαν οδηγίες να μεταγράφουν μόνο όσα άκουγαν να απευθύνονται προς στην Google (μετά την ενεργοποίηση του ψηφιακού βοηθού της από την έκφραση για παράδειγμα «Hey Google») και όχι άλλους ήχους, από το παρασκήνιο κ.λπ.

Την Άνοιξη, η Google ανακοίνωσε ότι ο Google Assistant πρόκειται να διατεθεί σε 80 διαφορετικές χώρες και σε 30 γλώσσες στο επόμενο διάστημα. Οι συζητήσεις που διέρρευσαν προέρχονταν από την Ολλανδία και το Βέλγιο, όπου ο Google Assistant είναι διαθέσιμος μόνο από τα τέλη του 2018 και η πηγή τους ήταν τόσο τα έξυπνα ηχεία της Google (Google Home κ.λπ) όσο και το app για smartphones, Google Assistant. Αφότου έγινε γνωστή η διαρροή, η Google μέσω ανάρτησης στο επίσημο blog της έκανε γνωστό ότι μισθώνει «language reviewers» για την γλωσσική αξιολόγηση ενός μικρού συνόλου ερωτημάτων (περίπου το 0,2%) για την καλύτερη κατανόηση διαφορετικών γλωσσών.

Όπως αναφέραμε η Google δήλωσε ότι ο voice assistant της έστελνε ήχο στην Google μόνο αφότου είχε ενεργοποιηθεί με κάποιον τρόπο από τον χρήστη, όπως με την έκφραση «Hey Google». Όμως το Βελγικό VRT NWS μετά από σχετικά έρευνα κατέληξε στο συμπέρασμα ότι οι ισχυρισμοί της Google δεν είναι και τόσο αληθινοί, με την έννοια ότι σε 153 περιπτώσεις από τις συζητήσεις που έπεσαν στα χέρια των δημοσιογράφων του, οι χρήστες δεν είχαν ενεργοποιήσει τον Google Assistant με κάποιο τρόπο.

Αυτή την περίοδο, η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή εξετάζει το ζήτημα για παραβιάσεις του Γενικού Ευρωπαϊκού Κανονισμού Προστασίας των Δεδομένων (GDPR). H Google σταμάτησε προσωρινά πάντως το «transcribing» των ηχογραφήσεων από τον voice assistant της στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση.
