Good communication in this game is the key of everything. It helps you find informations, and cooperate efficiently in any group. When you press the "Enter" key, a text box will show at the bottom of your chat window. By default, the text will be white, and you will be talking in the /say chat. By typing other /command, you will be able to use various different chats.

To help all the new players, I am listing here every different ingame chat. I am indicating:

-what /command you must type to use this chat,

-what color the text will be (by default) when you are talking in that chat,

-a description of the chat and its uses.

Also, remember that english isnt my primary language, so I appologize in advance for any grammatical error (and I welcome all correction).

Index (not that this post is huge, but it may help anyway...)

1) Characters chats

2) Zone chats (General, Trade, Looking For Group, Local Defense, Guild Recruitment chat)

3) Very useful tips

---

1) Character chat:

I call those chats "Character chat" because you use them to talk directly to other players. You can link any items in those chats by shift-clicking the item from your inventory while the text field is open.

/say - /s

Default text color: white

This can only be read by those who are VERY close to you.

-Even if you can see them on your screen, many players wont read what you said in /say. You must be very very close to the player in order to be read. For that reason, never use a /s to talk to your group mate, use the party chat instead.

-The /say chat is the default one when you enter the game. Simply press the « Enter » key in order to use this chat.

/yell - /y

default text color: red

This can be read by everyone in a very wide range around you.

-Even if this can be read in a VERY large aera, this has a limit. Many people seems to believe that everyone in the same zone or city can read it, but no. Even in IronForge, someone who /yell inside the Auction House will not be read in the Forlorn Cavern.

/whisper - /w

default text color: pink

This chat can only be read by the person you send the message to.

-To send a whisper, type "/w <player name> <message>",

-You can also left-click any name from any chat.

-To answer to the last person who whispered you, simply type "R".

-If more than one person has whispered you, after pressing "R", you can use the "tab" key to change the person you are sending your whisper to.

-Whispers works no matter where in the world the players are.

/party - /p

default text color: blue

This chat can only be use while in a group, and can be read by every group member.

-Everyone in the same group will read what you type in /p, no matter where they are in the world. But only the players in your group will read it.

-Once you used the /p, every time you will press the "Enter" key to talk, the party chat will now be used by default.

/guild - /g

default text color: green

This chat can only be use while in a guild.

-Everyone in your guild will read what you type in /g, no matter where they are in the world. But only those in your guild will read it.

-Once you used the /g, every time you will press the "Enter" key to talk, the guild chat will now be used by default.

/officer - /o

default text color: dark green

This is a very uncommon chat, that can only be use by the guild officers and the Guildmaster of the same guild, no matter where they are in the world.

-The guildmaster can decides who can use the officer chat, and who cant.

-Note that the officer chat will never be used by default after you used it, you will always have to type /o in order to use it.

/raid - /ra

default text color: orange

Same as Party chat, but for an entire raid.

-Note that a raid is the union of many 5-men groups that share quest objectives, loots, and kill credits. Let say you are in a 25-men raid, you will be in a group of 5 persons, that will work in team with 4 other groups of 5 persons (5x5=25). That being said, when you are in a raid, if you talk using the /p chat, only the 4 other players in your own group will read you. If you want to be read by anyone in the raid, you must use the /raid chat.

/battleground - /bg

default text color: orange

Exactly the same as Raid chat, but used in Battlegrounds :

-Use this in Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin, Alterac Valley, or Eye of the Storm only (until such a time as other battlegrounds are added).

-There is always one player marked as « Battleground Leader » for each faction. When the leader talk in the /bg chat, his text will show in white.

-Not certain if it works for Arenas, if they instead use the Party chat (since they're limited to 5 players max), or if they use a special Arena chat. Any info about that ?

2) Zone chats (General, Trade, Looking For Group, Local Defense, Guild Recruitment chat)

Those are the chat that can be use by anyone in the same zone, or the same capital.

-Trade, General, Guildrecruitment, LocalDefense and WorldDefense (and LFG in the next patch) are created by default by Blizzard.

-You can also create your own channel by typing: /join <AnyNameHere>. Anyone who wants to join you in your channel can type the same /command.

-You can't link items in those chats, except trade. If you shift-click any item, the Item name will appear in the text, but they wont be clickable.

-How do I talk in the General chat ? :

when someone is talking into the general chat, you will see something like:

"1.General - [playername]: hi"

The number at the beginning is the number of the chat. If you want to talk into that chat, simply type /1 <yourtext> and you're in.

-By default, /1 is for General chat, /2 is for trade, /3 is for Local Defense, /4 for world Defense.

-This apply for all Zone chats

-How do I leave the General chat?:

-You can type /leave general, or /leave 1 (if the General chat is at position 1, remember)

-This apply for all Zone chats

-How do I join the General Chat?:

-Type /join General.

-This apply for all Zone chats

-Is there a way to know wich chat is open and wich one is closed?

-Type /chatlist This will give you a list of all the zone chats that are currently open for you.

-Why does my General chat is not at position 1 (or my trade at 2, etc etc)?

When you log in, the game gives a position to every open zone chats. If one of your zone chat was closed when you logged in (because you leaved that chat before logging off the last time), the game wont give him a position. So if you did /leave General before you logged off, when you come back you will have your trade at position 1, your local defense at 2, etc etc etc.

-Is there a way to know how many players are actually log into the General chat?

Certainly. Simply type " /chatwho 1 " (if the General chat is at position 1)

-This apply for all Zone chats, simply type /chatwho chat#

-Can I link an item in the zone chats?

You can link items only in the Trade channel. All others channel will simply link the name of the item, but nobody will be able to click that link.

General

default color: peach

/1 By default

-General Chat can be read by anyone in the same zone as you (or same capital).

By example, everyone in Elwynn will read the General chat of Elwynn, everyone in Orgrimar will read the general chat of Orgrimar, but someone in Stormwind wont be able to read the General chat of Elwynn.

-Only players of the same faction can read the General chat, meaning that every zone and every capitals has one General for the Horde and one for the Alliance.

-Note that some Addons let you read and use the General chat of other zones.

-The General chat of the Barrens, Horde side, is.... unique...

Trade

default color: peach

/2 By default

-Trade Chat can be read in every capitals, but only in capitals.

-Only players of the same faction can read the Trade chat, meaning that every capital has one Trade for the Horde, and one for the Alliance.

-The Trade chat purpose is to buy and sell items. If you have any comments to say about anything, just say it in the General chat.

-You can link an item so that others can click on the link to see the stats of the object. Simply shift-click any item from your inventory while the text field is open.

Local Defense

default color: peach

/3 By default

-This chat is somewhat unique: A message will generate automatically to tells anyone that a player of the opposite faction is attacking an NPC of your faction in your current zone (or Capital).

Guild Recruitment

default color: peach

/4 By default

-This chat will be turn on by default if you arent in a guild, and turn off by default if you are in one.

-This chat is used only in Capitals

-Obviously, this chat is use by Guilds who are recruiting, or by players who wants to join a guild.

Looking for Group

default color: peach

This chat is very different from the other Zone chats. You cant acces this chat unless you used the LFG/LFM interface.

-On the bottom bar, you have a button that looks like a green eye. If you press it, an interface will allow you to place yourself in a list in order to find a group for a difficult quest, a dungeon, and even for a zone.

-Once you used the LFG/LFM and placed yourself in a queue, you will be granted acces to the LFG Chat. The LFG/LFM UI is barely used to find a group, but you will then be able to talk and read the LFG chat.

3) Private (or custom) chat channels

It is possible to create your own chat channel. Players who join those custom channels can chat wherever they are in the World of Warcraft. You can use as many custom channels as you wish.

-Some guilds have customs channel to let members of 2 or many guilds to talk together

-On RP server, many RP guilds uses a Out Of Character channel.

-Real life friends who do not want to disturb the whole guild or their party sometimes uses private channel.

-You can use VoiceCat on a custom channel

-By default, the text from those channels are the same color as the General/Trade/LFG channels.

Create a Private channel

/join <channel_name>

Create a private Channel with password

/join <channel_name> <password>

To join an already existing private channel

/join <channel_name>

To join an already existing private channel which required a password

/join <channel_name> <password>

The creator of the private channel can moderate it. He can also assigned other users with moderator rights.

Here are the /commands you can use to moderate a custom channel.

Only the channel creator, and players with a moderator status, can use those commands:

/announcements

/ann

-Creates an announcement message for all to see when logging in the channel.

/cinvite <player_name>

/chatinvite <player_name>

-This command let you invite a player to your channel.

/ckick <channel_name> <player_name>

-Kick a player off a channel

/ban <player_name>

/unban <player_name>

-Permanently Ban/unban a player from a channel

/mute <player_name>

/unmute <player_name>

-Change a player's permission to use Voice Chat on the channel

/mod <player_name>

/moderator <player_name>

/unmod <player_name>

/unmoderator <player_name>

-Gives or remove a moderator status to the player

/password <channel> <password>

/pass <channel> <password>

-Set (if there were none) or change the channel's password.

-If you are trying to log into a password protected channel, you must type /join <channel_name> <password>

/owner <player_name>

-Change the channel owner, assuming you are the current channel owner.

4) Very useful Tips

From any chat, if you left-click on any player name, you will open a /whisper to that player.

From any chat, if you right-click on any player name, you will see many option you can do with that player, including inviting to a group.

From any chat, if you shift-click on any player name, you will see all the information concerning the player, including is class, race, level, location (where he is in the world of Warcraft) and guild name.

You can link an item in the characters chat and in the trade chat. Shift-click the item from your inventory while the text field is open.

Writing in FULL CAPITAL LETTERS in any chat is consider rude and terribly innapropriate (and not only in this game, this is an ethic rule everywhere on the internet). The best way to be ignore and never receive the help or the info you are seeking.

    • A lot of people say L2 is dead, and ACIS is still in development. But seriously, you’ve got the skills and knowledge why not make your own game with a clean brand new client from scratch? The only thing missing is client devs, and you can find plenty here or on freelance sites. Stop treating it like a hobby and turn it into something that can actually make money and people happy, you have the name just move forward, even AI can help you script quests, me first I would totally play any game you made similar to l2 anyway 🍪 have one i know you like them
