Facebook is a whole company. The website is hosted on many machines, and these machines are connected to the internet at really fast connections. It is impossible to be down. If someone succeed to ddos on connection automatically the site starts usng another connection.

Ηosting on many machines doesn't make it strong and not possible to be down , and yes facebook was under heavy attack it need times to respond on actions.
