Τα ημερολόγια των Μάγια τελειώνουν σε 2 χρόνια. Σύμφωνα με έναν Αμερικανό φυσικό, ίσως έχουν δίκιο. Ιδού γιατί.

 

Κατακλυσμιαίες εκρήξεις ηφαιστείων, μαγνητικές καταιγίδες, ακτινοβολία από το διάστημα... Μόλις σε 2 χρόνια θα έρθει η συντέλεια του κόσμου, σύμφωνα με όσα προφητεύει ο Λόρενς Ε. Τζόζεφ, Αμερικανός φυσικός και συγγραφέας του βιβλίου Apocalypse 2012. Αυτή η πεποίθηση βασίζεται στις γραφές του ημερολόγιου των Μάγια, του μυστηριώδους προκολομβιανού λαού που άκμασε στην Κεντρική Αμερική από το 1800 π.Χ. ως το 1450 μ.Χ. Σύμφωνα με αυτές στις 20 Δεκεμβρίου 2012 ολοκληρώνεται ο κύκλος της Μεγάλης Μέτρησης. Επιπλέον, την επόμενη ημέρα από αυτή την ημερομηνία είναι το χειμερινό ηλιοστάσιο και ο Ήλιος θα είναι ευθυγραμμισμένος με το κέντρο του Γαλαξία για πρώτη φορά μετά από 26.000 χρόνια... Μήπως πρέπει να ανησυχήσουμε;

 

Υπερδραστήριος Ήλιος

Οι αστρονομικές ευθυγραμμίσεις δεν είναι επικίνδυνες ούτε και άγνωστες, δεδομένου ότι οι επιστήμονες παρατηρούν συνεχώς τέτοια φαινόμενα. Το 2002, για παράδειγμα, 5 πλανήτες ευθυγραμμίστηκαν σε ένα τόξο 33ο χωρίς καμιά συνέπεια στο σύμπαν. Από την άλλη, ο πολιτισμός των Μάγια υπήρξε ένας από τους πιο μυστηριώδεις του αρχαίου κόσμου, με ανώτερες ικανότητες στα μαθηματικά και την αστρονομία (βλ. πλαίσιο κάτω). Τι σημαίνει, λοιπόν, το τέλος του ημερολογίου τους; «Οι Μάγια χρησιμοποιούσαν διάφορα ημερολόγια, που συχνά συνδυάζονταν μεταξύ τους», λέει ο Κιθ Προύφερ, ανθρωπολόγος στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Νέου Μεξικού στις ΗΠΑ. «Παρ’ όλα αυτά, το τέλος του κύκλου της Μεγάλης Μέτρησης, που ερχόταν κάθε 5.125 χρόνια, δε σημαίνει ότι καταφτάνει η συντέλεια του κόσμου».

 

Δυστυχώς δε γνωρίζουμε με ακρίβεια τι θα έκαναν οι Μάγια στο τέλος αυτής της προθεσμίας. Με αυτή την απορία, ο Τζόζεφ αποφάσισε να προετοιμαστεί για τα χειρότερα, αναφέροντας τις συμφορές που θα μπορούσαν να μας πλήξουν. Ξεκινώντας από την ηλιακή δραστηριότητα, η οποία θα βρεθεί στο ζενίθ της το 2012.

 

Τρελοί πόλοι

Και αυτό το φαινόμενο όμως είναι φυσιολογικό, καθώς η ηλιακή δραστηριότητα ακολουθεί έναν κύκλο ενδεκαετούς διάρκειας (το τελευταίο αποκορύφωμα σημειώθηκε γύρω στο 2000). «Σε μια περίοδο μέγιστης δραστηριότητας», εξηγεί η Κάρεν Μάστερς, ερευνήτρια στο Κέντρο Χάρβαρντ Σμιθσόνιαν των ΗΠΑ, «απελευθερώνονται σωματίδια που ταξιδεύουν στο διάστημα και μπορούν να βλάψουν τους δορυφόρους και τα άλλα ηλεκτρονικά όργανα». Όμως δε συντρέχουν λόγοι ανησυχίας για τον άνθρωπο.

 

Ο Τζόζεφ, όμως, επιμένει: ισχυρίζεται ότι το 2012 οι μαγνητικοί πόλοι στο βορρά και το νότο θα μπορούσαν να αντιστραφούν, αφήνοντας τη Γη προσωρινά απροστάτευτη από τη μαγνητική «ασπίδα» που την προφυλάσσει από την κοσμική και ηλιακή ακτινοβολία. «Οι αναστροφές του γήινου μαγνητικού πεδίου χρειάζονται χιλιάδες χρόνια για να ολοκληρωθούν», εξηγεί ο Γκάρι Γκλατσμάιερ, καθηγητής επιστημών της Γης στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Καλιφόρνιας. «Και όταν συμβαίνει αυτό, η Γη δε μένει καθόλου εκτεθειμένη. Το μαγνητικό πεδίο γίνεται πιο πολύπλοκο αλλά δεν εξαφανίζεται: ο μαγνητικός βόρειος πόλος θα μπορούσε να εμφανιστεί στην Αφρική, για παράδειγμα, και ο νότιος πόλος στην Ταϊτή».

 

Μια άλλη θεωρία του Τζόζεφ είναι ότι θα μπορούσε να δραστηριοποιηθεί το υπερηφαίστειο του Γέλοουστοουν στις ΗΠΑ, που εκρήγνυται με καταστροφικό τρόπο κάθε 6-700 χιλιάδες χρόνια. Όμως οι γεωλόγοι που το παρατηρούν δεν προβλέπουν τίποτα ανησυχητικό για την επόμενη δεκαετία.

 

Ο ιός της υπερβολής

Η επιστήμη μάς καθησυχάζει. Όμως ο φόβος ότι μια κοσμική καταστροφή θα πλήξει τη Γη το 2012 έχει και άλλους υποστηρικτές εκτός από τον Τζόζεφ.

 

Όλα αυτά δημιουργούν ένα κλίμα αναμονής για το 2012, που θυμίζει λίγο-πολύ αυτό που είχε δημιουργηθεί την παραμονή του 2000. Τότε, σύμφωνα με εκτιμήσεις, ξοδεύτηκαν σε όλο τον κόσμο περίπου 300 δις δολάρια για επεμβάσεις στα συστήματα πληροφορικής ώστε να αποφευχθεί το millennium bug, ένας ιός που θα αχρήστευε όλα τα ηλεκτρονικά συστήματα στον πλανήτη. Τελικά το millennium ήρθε αλλά το bug κάπου χάθηκε στο δρόμο...

 

Κάποιοι άλλοι στηρίζουν τις δυσοίωνες προβλέψεις τους επικαλούμενοι τις προφητείες του Νοστράδαμου (1503-1566). «Ο Νοστράδαμος είχε προβλέψει το τέλος του κόσμου πολλές φορές κατά τους περασμένους αιώνες (βλ. πλαίσιο κάτω), όμως στα έργα του δεν υπάρχει καμία αναφορά στο 2012», λέει ο Πάολο Κορτέζι, ένας από τους σημαντικότερους μελετητές του. Μια πιο «επιστημονική» θεωρία συντέλειας είναι η θεωρία του Ολντουβάι, που διατυπώθηκε το 1989 από το μηχανικό Ρίτσαρντ Ντάνκαν, με βάση τα παγκόσμια στοιχεία για την ενέργεια και τον πληθυσμό. Η θεωρία πήρε το όνομά της από το φαράγγι του Ολντουβάι στην Τανζανία και αποτελεί μια αλληγορία για την εποχή του λίθου, όπου ίσως επιστρέψουμε σύντομα. Ο Ντάνκαν εκτιμά πως η ανθρωπότητα θα αρχίζει να παρακμάζει από το 2012. Όμως η θεωρία του έχει ήδη αποτύχει παταγωδώς να περιγράψει την περίοδο 1979-2008, για την οποία προέβλεπε καταστροφές οι οποίες τελικά δεν συνέβησαν.

 

Ο φόβος είναι η αιτία

Πολύ πιο ακραία είναι η περίπτωση αιρέσεων όπως ήταν το Heaven's Gate. Το 1997, 39 μέλη της αυτοκτόνησαν, ελπίζοντας να φτάσουν σε ένα «ανώτερο επίπεδο» προτού έρθει το τέλος του κόσμου. «Μια κοινωνικώς διαδεδομένη πεποίθηση, όπως ο φόβος μιας καταστροφής, μπορεί να έχει βαθιές πολιτικές και κοινωνικές συνέπειες, ιδίως αν τη συμμερίζονται άτομα που κατέχουν θέσεις ισχύος», εξηγεί ο Πολ Κουρτζ, φιλόσοφος στο Πανεπιστήμιο Μπάφαλο της Νέας Υόρκης. «Αν αφήνουμε τον εαυτό μας να επηρεάζεται από την καταστροφολογική σκέψη σημαίνει ότι δεν κάνουμε τίποτα για να προλάβουμε μια επικείμενη καταστροφή, περιμένοντας το αναπόφευκτο τέλος. Ή μπορεί να σημαίνει ότι συμπεριφερόμαστε με τρόπο που επαληθεύει την προφητεία». Ο φόβος για το τέλος του κόσμου ίσως τελικά μας οδηγήσει εκεί, από κακούς χειρισμούς...

 

Το τέλος ενός μεγάλου κύκλου 5.125 ετών

Οι Μάγια δε γνώριζαν τον τροχό, όμως ήταν πολύ ικανοί στα μαθηματικά (γνώριζαν την έννοια του «μηδενός») και στην αστρονομία (προέβλεπαν με ακρίβεια τις εκλείψεις).

Τρία ημερολόγια.

Για να μετρούν το χρόνο, χρησιμοποιούσαν τρία είδη ημερολογίων. Υπήρχε ένα πολύ παλιό θρησκευτικό ημερολόγιο, το τσόλκιν, που μετρούσε 260 ημέρες (που διαιρούνταν σε 13 μήνες των 20 ημερών). Υπήρχε έπειτα ένα ημερολόγιο που ακολουθούσε τις εποχές και διαρκούσε 365 ημέρες. Ένα άλλο ημερολόγιο, γνωστό ως Μεγάλη Μέτρηση, προσδιόριζε μια περίοδο 5.125 ετών.

Μυθική προέλευση;

Έτσι όπως οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες μετρούσαν τα έτη από τους πρώτους Ολυμπιακούς αγώνες και οι Ρωμαίοι από την ίδρυση της Ρώμης, έτσι και η Μεγάλη Μέτρηση των Μάγια ξεκινούσε από μια συγκεκριμένη ημέρα, που πιθανώς αντιπροσώπευε ένα θεμελιώδες γεγονός, το οποίο χάνεται πίσω στο 3113 π.Χ.

Γιορτή.

Η Μεγάλη Μέτρηση ολοκληρώνεται το 2012, όμως αυτό δεν είναι κακός οιωνός. Η Σάντρα Νομπλ, διευθύντρια του Ιδρύματος για την προαγωγή των κεντροαμερικανικών σπουδών του Κρίσταλ Ρίβερ (ΗΠΑ), εξηγεί: «Για τους αρχαίους Μάγια, η άφιξη στο τέλος του κύκλου αντιπροσώπευε μια μεγάλη γιορτή».

 

Ο πολιτισμός που αυτοκαταστράφηκε

Πριν από χίλια χρόνια, σε ένα απομονωμένο νησί 3.600 χλμ. ανατολικά της Χιλής, στη Νήσο του Πάσχα, άκμασε ένας πολιτισμός που σκάλισε εκατοντάδες γιγαντιαίους ογκόλιθους σε σχήμα ανθρώπινου κεφαλιού. Έπειτα, ξαφνικά, αυτός ο πολιτισμός εξαφανίστηκε.

Κατάρρευση.

Γιατί; Θα μπορούσε να συμβεί και σε εμάς; «Η Νήσος του Πάσχα είναι το τέλειο παράδειγμα της κοινωνίας που αυτοκαταστρέφεται, γιατί εκμεταλλεύεται υπερβολικά το περιβάλλον», λέει ο Τζάρεντ Ντάιαμοντ στο βιβλίο Κατάρρευση (Εκδ. Κάτοπτρο). «Ο παραλληλισμός με το σύγχρονο κόσμο είναι πολύ ισχυρός. Χάρη στην παγκοσμιοποίηση, όλες οι χώρες της Γης μοιράζονται σήμερα τους ίδιους πόρους και αλληλοεπηρεάζονται, όπως έκαναν οι φυλές στη Νήσο του Πάσχα. Αυτό το νησί ήταν ένα απομονωμένο κομμάτι γης στη μέση του Ειρηνικού Ωκεανού. Όταν οι κάτοικοι του νησιού άρχισαν να αντιμετωπίζουν δυσκολίες, δεν υπήρχε άλλο μέρος για να πάνε ούτε κάποιος δίπλα τους που θα μπορούσε να τους βοηθήσει. Το ίδιο μπορεί να συμβεί και σε εμάς, στη Γη. Η κατάρρευση της κοινωνίας της Νήσου του Πάσχα είναι ένα παράδειγμα, η χειρότερη εικασία για αυτό που μπορεί να μας επιφυλάσσει το μέλλον».

A more "scientific" theory is the apocalyptic theory Olntouvai, formulated in 1989 by engineer Richard Duncan, based on global information on energy and population. The theory got its name from the canyon Olntouvai in Tanzania and is a metaphor for the Stone Age, where it might come back soon. Duncan believes that humanity will begin to decline from 2012. But the theory has failed miserably to describe the period 1979-2008, which provided disaster which ultimately did not happen.

 

Fear is the cause

Much more extreme is the case sects as was the Heaven's Gate. In 1997, 39 members killed themselves, hoping to reach a "higher level" before coming to the end of the world. "A socially widespread belief, such as fear of a disaster can have profound social and political consequences, especially if shared by people in positions of power," explains Paul Kourtzi, a philosopher at the University of Buffalo, New York. "If we let ourselves be influenced by katastrofologiki thinking means that we do nothing to prevent an impending disaster awaiting the inevitable end.
