Help interlude, interlude +, classic interlude.

Hello peeps. 
I'm interested in starting a new project and I would like your help and advice on how to start depending my demands. So I've been downloading servers left and right and I see that many of them have the tags interlude or interlude+ but they are build with systems and features from highers clients(Not UI) like classic , homunuclulus , shinemaker , essence etc. Few years ago as I remember interlude wasn't so easy to mod with newer features I guess that changed ? or they use other clients and name them interlude.
If I would like to do something like that with an interlude base what and where should I start ,what type of developer need to approach first and do you have any recommendations?
