Well for the buttons: He doesn't make the buttons, he make the template with a generator and the generator that he use has a ready menu style....

i am sorry but i don't like at all try to make a more better menu then i sujest you to center the template and for the design to use web2.0 styles an then i believe that your template will be more beautiful Also you can add some boxes at the rights and at the left of the template....
