Well its simple If you have Dragon age origins, you can play the game story (last 40-50h) and you will reach lvl 22-25 and you can import that character into Dragon age origins awakening. Why would you do that? Well, the story of Dragon age origins is amazing and, if you start dragon age origins awakening with a new character your level will be 18 (less skills, less hp, less stats)

You must have origins installed, but you can play awakening with out making a story on origins.
