Mysql And Jdk For Interlude Server?

Back when I had a server published I remember using outdated mysql and jdk/eclipse versions for some reason. Is there any reason the latest ones wouldn't work on an interlude server?

Also, is having xampp's mysql with a separate mysql instance installed a pain in the ass or easy to solve?
