i am on many gfx forums ;) , i watch devian art 24/7 ^.^ , i mean with the i cant see the render that render has become one with background and its not a style but its a mistake , i have seen many sigs and propably much more than you did, i just tell you that you either should blend bg , either the render and some more effects , bg is kinda low quality and without effects . ( sorry for my english im practising ^,^) or i just cant get your style.

I agree some gfx events would be nice , but there would be no prize and also we got 3-4 that one of them propably would win so i think its just waste of time , but it would be nice so newbies can see many styles of making sigs and would have the potential to imrpove C: , a really nice idea vrffffffffsssw, i hope gfx mods will make something soon :).
