i started with vb and delphi and i still continue with them and as kauliaris said if you know and understand one language its too easy to understand other.My opinion is to start with vb or delphi and then continue to java or C.

 

P.S: You dont need to continue to other languages just start with one and continue with that.I keep on vb for 3 years.Also if you dont want to use tutorials you can get ready projects read them and understand how it works.For projects(source) go to http://planetsourcecode.com
