Λαμβάνοντας βεβαίως υπόψη ότι και τα προηγούμενα μοντέλα Pixel 3a δεν υποστήριζαν το headset εικονικής πραγματικότητας, και πως η εταιρεία δεν έχει ανακοινώσει κάποια νεότερη έκδοση του, τότε η συγκεκριμένη απόφαση δεν αποτελεί έκπληξη. Χάρη στα 90Hz, το headset της Google ενδεχομένως θα έκλεινε κατά κάποιο την ψαλίδα με τα «desktop headsets» από άποψη εμπειρίας -τα Oculus Quest και HTC Vive Focus «τρέχουν» στα 60Hz για παράδειγμα σε αντίθεση με τα Vive Pro και Oculus Rift- οπότε αυτή η εξέλιξη μοιάζει ενδεχομένως με χαμένη ευκαιρία.

Η Google πάντως δεν φαίνεται να συμμερίζεται αυτή την άποψη: «Δεν υπήρξε η ευρεία αποδοχή από πλευράς καταναλωτών και developers που περιμέναμε, και διαπιστώσαμε ότι η χρήση του Daydream View μειωνόταν με την πάροδο του χρόνου. Πάντως, παρόλο που δεν συνεχίζουμε την πώληση του Daydream View και δεν υποστηρίζουμε το Daydream με το Pixel 4, το Daydream app και το store θα παραμείνουν στην διάθεση των χρηστών» δήλωσε εκπρόσωπος της Google στην ιστοσελίδα Venture Beat.

Η Google επίσης δεν πρόκειται να πιστοποιήσει νέες συσκευές για την συμβατότητα τους με το headset εικονικής πραγματικότητας της, οπότε δεν θα πρέπει να περιμένουμε νέες συσκευές ή νέα χαρακτηριστικά να προστεθούν. Αντιθέτως, η εταιρεία θα εστιάσει στις εμπειρίες επαυξημένης πραγματικότητας, που πρόσφατα βρήκαν χρήση στα Google Lens, Search και Maps, και που για να επωφεληθεί κάποιος από αυτές δεν απαιτείται κάποιο headset.

Εκτός από το Daydream View, η Google σταματάει επίσης την πώληση και ενός ακόμα προϊόντος, της κάμερας Google Clips, του πλέον περίεργου προϊόντος που έχει ανακοινώσει η εταιρεία, και ενδεχομένως του πλέον αποτυχημένου από την μεριά του hardware. Υποτίθεται ότι η Clips ήταν μία τύπου «auto-recording» camera, την οποία ο χρήστης τοποθετούσε σε ένα σημείο, και εκείνη με την σειρά της εκμεταλλευόμενη την τεχνητή νοημοσύνη υποτίθεται τραβούσε σε φωτογραφίες τις σημαντικότερες στιγμές της ημέρας και στοίχιζε… $250.
