Αν και οι ειδικοί παρακολουθούν μεγάλο αριθμό τέτοιων ουράνιων σωμάτων που ενδεχομένως βρίσκονται σε απειλητική ή μη τροχιά από τη Γη, ο αστεροειδής 2019 ΟΚ πέρασε σχεδόν απαρατήρητος. Ένα βίντεο που δείχνει τις τροχιές του αστεροειδή και της Γης που δόθηκε στη δημοσιότητα δείχνει πόσο κινδύνευσε ο πλανήτης μας από κάποια σύγκρουση με τον αστεροειδή.

O αστεροειδής βρέθηκε σε απόσταση μόλις 72 χιλιάδων χιλιομέτρων σηματοδοτώντας μία από τις πλησιέστερες προσεγγίσεις που έχουν παρατηρηθεί τα τελευταία χρόνια. Αν και βεβαίως, το μέγεθος του αστεροειδή δεν ήταν τόσο μεγάλο ώστε να προκαλέσει ένα γεγονός σαν αυτό που αφάνισε τους δεινόσαυρους πριν από εκατομμύρια χρόνια, ήταν αρκετά μεγάλος για να καταστρέψει μία πόλη. Ο καθηγητής Αστρονομίας Allan Duffy, δήλωσε στην Sydney Morning Herald ότι πρόκειται για έναν «φονέα πόλεων», επειδή λόγω του μεγέθους του παραμένει απαρατήρητος μέχρι σχεδόν τη τελευταία στιγμή, και πως από τη σύγκρουση του με τη Γη θα εκλυόταν «30 φορές περισσότερη ενέργεια από την ατομική βόμβα στη Χιροσίμα».

Τον αστεροειδή 2019 ΟΚ παρατήρησαν πρώτοι οι ερευνητές στο Παρατηρητήριο SONEAR στην Βραζιλία, στις 24 Ιουλίου, μόλις μία μέρα πριν προσεγγίσει απειλητικά τον πλανήτη μας. Από τότε, η NASA δημοσίευσε μία έκθεση για τον αστεροειδή, ο οποίος φαίνεται να είχε διάμετρο μεταξύ 57 και 130 μέτρων. Αν και ο αστεροειδής τελικά αποδείχτηκε μη απειλητικός για τη Γη, εντούτοις η ανίχνευση του, μόλις μερικές ώρες πριν την προσέγγιση του, προκάλεσε ανησυχία στους επιστήμονες.

Το 2013, ένας μετεωρίτης πέρασε πάνω από το Chelyabinsk στη Ρωσία προκαλώντας μία τεράστια έκρηξη που έσπασε παράθυρα και προκάλεσε διάφορες ζημιές σε κτίρια που προκάλεσαν πάνω από χίλιους τραυματισμούς.
