Σύμφωνα με την Square Enix, το Final Fantasy VII Remake αποτελεί επαναδημιουργία και επέκταση του κλασικού τίτλου. Τέσσερα μάλιστα βασικά μέλη της αρχικής ομάδας παραγωγής, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του director, του writer, του character designer και του composer επέστρεψαν στην παραγωγή του νέου τίτλου για να επιβλέψουν την ανάπτυξη του update.  

To Final Fantasy VII Remake διαθέτει νέα στοιχεία στο σενάριο και στο gameplay ενώ αφαιρέθηκαν ορισμένα συστατικά και στοιχεία που η ομάδα ανάπτυξης θεώρησε ότι ήταν ξεπερασμένα. Βεβαίως, οι περισσότεροι φίλοι του τίτλου ελπίζουν να μην έχουν γίνει πολλές και μεγάλες αλλαγές.
