Linux, using aircrack-ng. There's also a Windows version but it does not support many wireless cards.

No, it has to be near you. You have to collect some packets(IVs) and then calculate the WEP key.

I recommend you , first of all, search with google engine the default keys, try them and if you dont find the key , use aircrack like Hax0r said  ;)
