I highly doubt there's difference from softlayer to hetzner to whatever.

If your using a cheaply based hosting where everything is preselected in form of packs and configs, it's a low end hosting where the objective is quantity.

No matter where the fuck its hosted and how awesome "theplanet" or whatever is.

It's the managed service behind it.

Rackspace being a good example, of "a bit" uptear imho for specific solutions.

Might as well go with the lowend sites these big companies set up to sell extra of their stock

Support from server4you is just a shame.

-With their lower prices happen that they apply an extra-charge for almost every service they provide.

-They only accept 1 support ticket per day (no matter if you are having serious issues on the server like connectivity errors).

-Is hardt to finish contract with them.

Hetzner.de is the very best you can get from Europe, but is only chep if you plain to stay more than 3 months (because of the extra setup price).

Serverloft.com offer almost same machines than Hetzner, they are a bit more expensive but setup is free.

What help can you possibly need?

www.velia.net, good support, hardware selection and addon (not only predefined crap), and good prices too. Also a good hosting that will survive even a cataclysm is www.cyberbunker.com even nuclear warheads can't beat it. I heard the pirate bay is hosted there.

rofl that 2nd one is funny. No TPB isn't hosted there anymore (before they got raided it was i think. I remember them reading they were moving to Ukraine nuclear bunker), Wikileaks' old mirrors were hosted in a similar bunker though.

Ukraine was before, check wiki.

On 2 October 2009, The Pirate Bay's hosting services moved to Ukraine and their traffic was routed through The Netherlands, but BREIN contacted the ISP NForce and service was stopped. In return, The Pirate Bay moved their hosting location to a nuclear bunker owned by CyberBunker just outside Kloetinge in the south of the Netherlands.

I had a box on velia datacenter and is true, their support is awesome, but the prices/spec of their dedicates are worst than hetzner.de.

Sure but is a price for getting professional stuff, cause for that price in other hosting you get less, like no OS change for example(in velia Windows Server 2003 is available even if not listed), not customizable.
