I think karma is a reward when you do good things(topics,guides etc.)and when someone removes you karma and you go under 0 then you don't have the right to post anything for a certain amount of time,otherwise you get banned :)

About the first part i agree but if you have (example) -1 karma then you

must follow the rules more carefully otherwise if you continue spaming / flaming you will get banned.

If you want to raise up your karma then you need only to make shares.
