This tutorial will show you how to make a very basic android/robot-like character.

The starting image:

Getting Started

Cut out the woman. This one is easy to separate from the background because the background is simply white. Place her body in a new layer and turn the background/bottom layer white. You can add a background later if you like, but for the purpose of this tutorial we are just going to leave it white.

Now, reposition the circuit board on a layer beneath the lady. Create a couple layers if you have to, to fill in the space behind the woman where you’re going to want the circuit board showing.

Trim up the circuit board so you cannot see the edge of it under the woman’s layer.

Showing What She’s Got

We’re going to remove some of her skin. We don’t want it to look like it just sloughed off, we want it to look like it was rubbed/scraped away. To do this, you want to just remove small areas at a time, using one of your Charcoal brushes with your eraser.

I started at the arm. Slowly, adjusting the size of your brush as you go, remove bits and pieces of skin until you have the look you’re going for.

Shade It

Once you’ve removed all the skin, you need to adjust the shadows of the circuit board a little bit. It’s more flat, where she has some variations in color/shading.

Duplicate the circuit board’s layer. Preserve the transparency in the Layers window for the top of the two circuit board layers. Using the gradient tool, and the colors black and white, add a gradient to the top layer of circuit.

Now, change that layer’s Blending Mode to Overlay. It will make your gradient look more like shadows over your circuit.

Show The Damage

Using the Burn tool, select the same Charcoal brush, and change the Exposure to 18-20%. You’ll have to go over the same areas several times, but this is okay because you want it to look more realistic and not so drawn-on.

Use different sizes of the brush to vary the scratches and burns from whatever accident she was in.

Finished!
