Ofc, but hearing sth is the best way to get to know it.

Depends to what are you hearing. I think someone should hear the best songs of each band to judge it and of course to hear only Rock or Metal and can recognise the differences, example someone who likes house or pop can't judge nothing regarding rock/metal and such
