Eliminating block artifacts in video

 

Compressed video sometimes becomes blocky or pixelated. MPEG, for example, divides the image into "blocks" of 8x8 pixels. Each of these pixels are compressed.

 

Because big amounts of data are forced to fit a limited amount of space, some pixels are discarded. This results in blocking during decompression or playback, especially when image sequences become too complex (as in high action scenes).
